Tips for healthy gums

Healthy Gums

Part of keeping your oral health in check includes caring for your gums. Oral hygiene is not simply brushing your teeth. Gums play an important role as without healthy gums, your teeth will be affected. The good news is that keeping your gums in good condition and avoiding gum disease is relatively simple!

Floss

You should aim to floss at least once a day. This helps remove the plaque and food in between your teeth that your toothbrush cannot reach. Do it at night, do it in the morning, or do it after lunch … just do it!

Dental Cleanings

Making regular appointments with your oral hygienist will benefit your overall oral health immensely. When plaque is left on the teeth for too long, it becomes calculus and a professional cleaning is the only way to remove this tartar. It can also get rid of any plaque you may have missed when brushing or flossing. If you have gingivitis (gum disease), then brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings can help reverse it.

Quit smoking

We’re sure you’ve heard this one before, and not just from your dentist! Quitting smoking is a good decision with regards to your overall health. Not only this, but smoking is strongly associated with the onset of gum disease. Plus, smoking makes it more difficult for your gums to heal once they’ve been damaged.

Brush twice a day

Brushing your teeth will help to remove plaque which can cause gum disease. Maintaining oral hygiene is one of the best ways to ensure that your gums stay healthy and to fight off gum disease. Opt for a toothpaste that contains fluoride.
